Drawn from explosive current events – the Palestine Liberation Army’s killing of an American Jewish passenger on the ship Achille Lauro in 1985, this 1991 work remains electrifying, controversial, and impossible to ignore. John Adams – one of contemporary classical music’s titanic figures – has his third opera at the Met in recent seasons.
